Colocasia 'Redemption'

Google 'Redemption' colocasia and you'll see images of shiny, jet-black leaves with hot pink centers and pink veins. We were a bit skeptical about the gallon-can specimens that came in because the leaves are mostly green with pink veins. Turns out that is normal for the juvenile leaves, and age and heat will make the transformation from ordinary to extraordinary. This cultivar was developed by Brian Williams, a Kentucky nurseryman who is striving to develop exotic, unusual plants that are hardy down to zone 6. 'Redemption' is hardy to 0 degrees Fahrenheit, and has the most startling mature leaves we hope to see. Though Elephant Ears like high temps, they do better with afternoon shade or all day dappled sun. Consider growing this specimen in a container planter that can be moved indoors when the temperatures drop. Mature plants may reach three to four feet in height and width, so give 'Redemption' room to grow.
