Feed and water taro throughout the growing season and watch how large these dark, dramatic leaves can get.
Product Description
Product Description
Taro 'Illustris' is also known as Elephant Ears for obvious reasons. The dramatically dark, green-veined, heart-shaped leaves can grow to 3 feet long, and the plant may eventually reach five feet tall. 'Illustris' can actually handle a fair amount of sun as long as it is watered regularly, and even tolerates wet soil, as you might find along ponds or streams. Taro is a heavy feeder, so fertilize regularly during the growing season for the biggest, most spectacular leaves.
Taro plants will die back in the winter if left outside, and it can be brought indoors during the cold months. As a cautionary note, taro in its raw state can cause serious digestive issues if eaten by humans or animals due to the high levels of calcium oxalates found in the plant.
