It's amazing how many coleuses are sun tolerant these days, expanding their presence in the summer garden. 'Talavera Chocolate Velveteen' can handle sun and shade, offering a dark, chocolate brown leaf that verges on purple. Use as a thriller in hanging baskets or container planters, providing a dramatic backdrop for more colorful flowers or as a contrast to chartreuse foliage (think sweet potato vines). This variety can grow from one to three feet in height, spreading up to 18 inches wide, and may be used in borders along with shade perennials such as hostas or hardy fuchsias. Its flowers are insignificant to humans, though pollinators like them, so they can be removed to prolong the life of the foliage, or left on for our garden buddies.
