Clematis 'Multi-Blue'

Deciduous clematises are such show-offs, and they seem to go from dead-to-the-ground in winter to "here, let's get all these vines tangled up with each other" by mid-spring. Clematis 'Multi-Blue' produces almost double-petaled flowers that can be up to five inches across, thus the moniker of Large-Flowered Clematis. Growers call the color blue, gardeners may see it as purple, and pollinators call them food. Be sure to provide a trellis or some other climbing support for all clematises, and keep the "roots in the shade, head in the sun" for a happy, healthy plant. 'Multi-Blue' will benefit from two prunings per year - once after the first round of flowers have died off, then again in late winter to early spring, before the new growth emerges. In both cases, simply follow the stem back to a healthy bud, and cut just above that union.
