Chrysanthemum 'Arlette Purple'

When fall weather rolls around, gardeners start looking for chrysanthemums for brilliant color. 'Arlette Purple' is especially eye-catching, with its double-petaled light purple flowers. Due to the nature of the retail world, growers usually have chrysanthemums ready for market in late summer, and unfortunately, it's not the greatest time of year to be planting them in the ground, if the intent is to have them return year after year. They need time to establish roots and it's often too wet here in the Pacific NW for them to do so. That said, they are fabulous as fall annuals, adding that brilliant pop of color to container planters, hanging baskets, and garden borders.
Food for thought: fall planted chrysanthemums stand a better chance of returning in the spring if planted in containers that can be sheltered from the wet and cold in the winter. If successful, they can then be planted out in the garden when the weather warms up!
