We appreciate hinoki cypresses in the garden for so many reasons. Often architecturally interesting in addition to varying colors and textures, they can be used in container planters (including bonsai) or in the ground, as focal points or in small groupings. 'Sunny Swirl' Hinoki cypress sports bright gold, thread-like foliage that becomes more chartreuse toward the interior of the plant. Upright with stiff, contorted branches, this slow-growing conifer maintains a narrow profile, gradually reaching eight feet in height and six feet wide at maturity.
