Canna 'Cleopatra Red'

If the 'Cleopatra' canna were described as one would a person, the word "flaky" might come to mind. On the other hand, its sport, 'Cleopatra Red,' might be called 'drama queen,' with torch-like, orange-red flower stalks atop bronzy colored foliage that can reach four to five feet in height. Summer is show time for cannas, and yes, deadheading spent blooms will extend the blooming period well into fall, as long as the weather stays warm. 'Cleopatra Red' is hardy down to 10 degrees and thus may be better suited to grow in a large container that can be sheltered in the winter. Its eye-catching flowers and dark bronze leaves are well worth the effort so they can be enjoyed in following years.
