Caladium 'Puppy Love'

'Puppy Love' caladium is a playful mix of red veins on pink, heart-shaped leaves, with green edges thrown in for good measure. Heat and higher humidity with lots of indirect light will keep caladiums happy during their growing season, adding breathtaking color to outdoor shade or indoor gardens. 'Puppy Love' is unusual in that it allegedly can handle a sunny exposure, but full transparency, we cannot confirm that. As an alternative, all-day dappled sun or morning sun/afternoon shade may be a safer approach for the outdoor summer garden.

Like most plants that grow from tubers/bulbs/corms, caladiums need a rest period and as that time approaches, all those beautiful leaves will begin to droop and die. There are many videos online showing how to overwinter the tubers but in our Pacific NW climate, it may require more effort than many people are willing to expend. The simplest approach is to cut back all the dead leaves and stop watering the pot until new leaves appear in the spring. Given the right environment, they may come back, or not, so many gardeners treat these beauties as summer annuals.
