Blueberry 'Sweetheart'

Blueberries are perhaps one of the easiest and most reliable food crops that home gardeners can grow, in the ground or in large container planters. 'Sweetheart' produces large sweet berries in early summer then may yield a second, lighter crop in late summer to early fall if the weather stays mild. This variety may be a tad smaller in size than other varieties, growing four to six feet in height and three to four feet wide. Pruning out older growth in late winter keeps the plant healthy and easier to pick. A side dressing of compost in the spring will keep it happy. Though blueberries are self-pollinating, the yields and the size of berries will be greater if you plant at least two different varieties so they can cross pollinate.
