Begonia rhizomatous 'Escargot'

As much as gardeners dislike slugs and snails, most will surely appreciate 'Escargot Rhizomatous Begonia,' known more generically as a rex begonia. Large silver and green leaves grow in a spiral pattern, similar to the curl of a snail shell, around the stems of this unusual begonia. It grows best in a well-lit room (no direct sun) with well-draining soil and higher humidity, so keep this begonia away from heat vents and consider frequent misting, an electric humidifier, or placing the pot on a saucer-full of pebbles filled halfway with water. Rex begonias can "vacation" outside in the summer if given shade in the afternoon, but 'Escargot' Begonia will look great year-round indoors.
