Native to the Pacific NW, Western Wild Ginger slowly forms a low, semi-evergreen groundcover in shady woodland settings or next to ponds/streams. Slugs unfortunately love to eat this - humans should not (it's not the edible kind).
Product Description
Product Description
Western Wild Ginger is often overlooked as a shade-loving ground cover, but we're hoping to change gardeners' minds. Tolerant of full shade, it does equally well in dappled shade or morning sun with afternoon shade. Green, heart-shaped, fragrant leaves spread slowly by underground rhizomes, forming a groundcover that stands about four inches tall. Unusual dark purple, springtime flowers are often hidden under the foliage. Unfortunately, slugs and snails may also hide under the leaves, so put out slug bait or lots of coffee grounds to deter the slimy munchers. A mulch of our hazelnut shells may deter slugs as well!
