Anthurium andraeanum

Anthuriums are probably one of the easier plants to grow indoors with maximum results. The broad, shiny, heart-shaped spathes (often mistaken for the flower) can come in a variety of colors, including white, red, orange, pink shades, and even purple, and surround the spadix, which actually contains this plant's flowers. The foliage is equally attractive, forming narrow mounds up to 18 inches tall and about a foot wide. While credited with being a great air purifier, anthuriums will cause gastric distress if eaten by humans or pets, so keep out of the reach of curious nibblers. Anthuriums need a very well lit room and a higher humidity than that normally found in homes, so place the pots on pebble-filled saucers and add water halfway up to add moisture to the air.
