To be frank, Maidenhair ferns can be tricky to grow indoors, as they are somewhat particular about light, temperature, and humidity. That said, once the perfect location has been found, Maidenhair ferns will add a lush but dainty presence to the home. 'Pacific Maid' has what is known as double pinna, or leaflets that split again into smaller leaf segments, creating a fluffy, layered look. Add in the thin black stems, and you've got a stunning houseplant, well worth the effort.

So what is the ideal growing environment? Higher humidity, moist but not soggy soil, and a medium- to well-lit exposure with no direct sun. Keep ferns away from heat vents, and if placed on an upper shelf, consider placing it on a pebble-filled saucer with water barely covering the pebbles. Heat will cause evaporation which will add moisture to the air. Ferns are pet-friendly, but pets sometimes find ferns too interesting to ignore, so best to keep them out of the mouths of furry friends.
