Acer palmatum 'Twombly's Red Sentinel'

Rarely do Japanese maples grow in a columnar form, and 'Twombly's Red Sentinel' is one of a few varieties that does so naturally. Growing slowly to 10 to 15 feet tall, this specimen is only six to eight feet wide at maturity. Red leaves change color throughout the growing season, emerging a bright red in the spring, then darkening to a deep red or red/green in the summer. Autumn brings out the fall colors before leaves drop, revealing a blood red bark. 'Twombly's Red Sentinel' allegedly can handle full sun, bringing out the brightest colors, but it must be kept well watered, especially in hot weather. Its narrow form and slow growth make this variety an excellent choice for a large container planter, or where a narrower profile is needed
