Although technically an evergreen shrub in warmer climates, Thompson's Yellow Flowering Maple behaves as a perennial here in the Pacific NW, and is often treated as a summer annual. Growing two to three feet tall and spreading up to two feet wide, this unique plant can be grown in large containers (easier to shelter from cold weather) or planted directly in the ground. The downward facing, hibiscus-like yellow flowers start in late spring and continue throughout the summer, attracting pollinators and birds alike.
