Less "rainbow" and more "sunrise," this New Zealand Flax sports salmon to yellow hued leaves edged in green and bronze.

CloseFor those gardeners seeking a tropical look, consider incorporating New Zealand Flax into the landscape. 'Rainbow Sunrise' (sometimes called Maori Sunrise) has a slightly smaller profile than other phormium, growing from two to four feet tall and about as wide, with a color palette ranging from yellow to salmon and bronzy green. Considering its origins, New Zealand flax seems like it should be drought tolerant but actually looks its best when watered deeply if infrequently. It definitely requires a sunny location, be it in a coastal garden, container planter, or hillside, and could be used as an informal low hedge.
