Add drama to your indoor garden with this pet-friendly peperomia. Wine-red undersides provide a stark contrast to the almost black leaves.

CloseA visitor to the nursery once said they wanted to plant a "Goth" garden and this little peperomia would have been perfect. 'Metallic Peperomia' has gun-metal black leaves with silver veins and vivid wine-red undersides, growing to less than a foot tall and wide. Its compact size and slow growth makes it an ideal plant for terrariums or indoor planters, combined with other house plants of similar environmental needs. The cupped, almost succulent-like leaves are a clue as to what those needs are - a well-lit room with no direct light, a thorough watering only when the top inch of soil is dry, and higher humidity. 'Metallic Peperomia' forms an upright mound, though the weight of the leaves may eventually cause the stems to fan out, which may be tempting to curious pets. Not to worry, it is non-toxic to dogs and cats.
