Small, dense evergreen foliage works well in large container planters, with fragrant spring flowers.

CloseIt's ironic that a favorite holly in the nursery has small, smooth green leaves with nary a sharp edge in sight, yet when people see this False Sweet Olive (aka Asian Essence Osmanthus), they immediately think, "is that a holly?" No, this dense evergreen shrub is an osmanthus, though its small tooth-edged leaves do resemble miniature holly leaves. False Sweet Olive adds year-round greenery to container planters, as well as height, textural interest, and fragrant springtime flowers. In the ground, this osmanthus performs well as an informal hedge or privacy barrier, standing at five feet tall and about four feet wide at maturity, and may be shaped as well.
