Easy to mistake for liriope, this mondo grass has narrower leaves and forms a weed-resistant mat by spreading underground rhizomes.

CloseMondo Grass is valued for its ability to grow beautifully in the shade or partial sun, forming dense mounds of evergreen grass up to a foot tall and possibly wider. What casual observers usually miss are the summer flowers - anywhere from white to pale lilac - that eventually turn into small, iridescent blue, pea-sized berries. Mondo grass prefers consistent watering and should not be allowed to dry out completely. If the grass becomes unsightly due to underwatering or too much sun, shear it back, preferably in the late fall to early spring to encourage fresh new growth.
