Dwarf Cavendish Banana is one of those bigger than life type plants that grow readily in frost-free climates and absolutely fascinate Pacific NW gardeners. Massive paddle-shaped leaves emerge with red markings, then mature to solid green, growing on a pseudo-stem that can eventually reach eight to ten feet tall in the ground, and maybe half that height in a large container. Technically a perennial, bananas are frost-tender, and require lots of mulching and shelter from our Pacific NW winters if grown in the ground. Grown in a large pot, determined gardeners may bring it indoors during the cold months as long as they have a very well-lit room.
