Ornamental kale isn't the first thing that comes to mind when gardeners are looking for fall/winter color, but as the temperatures drop, this seasonal charmer starts putting on the show. 'Kamome Red' isn't a true red but is nevertheless a wonderful addition to fall/winter hanging baskets, container planters, and borders. Its frilly leaves provide texture while the center of the kale adds that spot of color we so hunger for in the darker days of fall and winter. Ornamental kales (aka flowering cabbages) tend to stay low and spread outward, about a foot tall and wide, so they fill spaces nicely and are a beautiful foil to pansies, mums, and even Dusty Miller.
