Close'Cape May' hydrangea is part of the Seaside Serenade series and though its growth habit and needs are the same as its cousin's, 'Cape Lookout,' the flowers could not be more different. Most obviously, 'Cape May' is a lacecap hydrangea, sometimes known as a mountain hydrangea, with large, deep pink bracts surrounding a center of small (fertile) buds, white to blue to purple in color. The more acidic the soil, the more purple/blue the pink portions of the lacecap will be. Lush green serrated leaves on sturdy stems form a rounded mound roughly three feet tall and wide. Prune this variety in the fall to keep it compact. 'Cape May' is the perfect size for growing in large containers on its own, in borders, or as a specimen for smaller shade gardens.
