CloseOne of the biggest surprises for a Garden Corner staff member was when she grew the exact same hydrangea in a container and another one in the ground. One produced blue flowers while the one in the pot emerged pink. This may happen when growing the Seaside Serenade 'Crystal Cove' lacecap hydrangea, with the frilly bracts appearing blue to purple when planted in acidic soil, or bright pink when grown in neutral to alkaline soil. Either way, this is a showoff lacecap hydrangea, with the paler colored centers of the bracts fringed with deeply colored edges. Pollinators love lacecap hydrangeas that bloom from late spring into the summer. 'Crystal Cove' has sturdy stems and lush green foliage that forms rounded mounds three to four feet tall and wide. Use it as a focal point of the summer shade garden, in the ground or in a container, but be prepared for the color to vary, depending upon the soil acidity.
