Generally speaking, the lighter colored coral bells are more shade tolerant than their deeply colored cousins, and the bright/light hues pop in the shade.

CloseCoral bells of all types are a favorite at The Garden Corner, perfect as a filler in hanging baskets and container planters (evergreen or seasonal), or in the ground in borders. The lighter colored heucheras tend to do better in shady locations and 'Caramel' is a perfect example. New growth emerges a grayish-red color then takes on more amber tones as the season progresses. The undersides of the leaves have that characteristic burgundy coloring, providing a surprising contrast. 'Caramel' forms fairly compact mounds of lobed, rounded leaves about 12 to 16 inches tall and spreading a bit wider, so they do well planted toward the edges of container planters or along walkways. Bees and hummingbirds appreciate the late-spring to summer flower stalks, though there are gardeners who prefer to remove them. Some sources state that heucheras are deer-resistant; however, we have found that statement to be untrue when preferred plants are unavailable.
