CloseWe cannot sing the praises enough of hardy fuchsias, one of the stars of Pacific NW shade gardens. Coming in a range of foliage size and color, one could plant five or more varieties and no two would look alike. 'Tom Thumb' is mid-sized with small dark green leaves forming a 24 to 30 inch tall and wide mound that is often covered with small bright pink and deep purple blooms. Give this specimen morning sun or all-day dappled sun for the best flowering - the bees and hummingbirds will appreciate it! While it's true 'Tom Thumb' fuchsia will die back in a hard freeze, it will come back year after year with little effort on the part of the gardener. Simply prune back the dead stems in late fall or winter before the new growth emerges, and you're good to go for another splendid season.
