When discussing fuchsias, many gardeners will immediately ask about the color of the blooms. Many will also assume that said fuchsia is an annual that trails from a hanging basket. Reset your thinking when it comes to hardy fuchsias because most are upright perennial shrubs, returning year after year with minimal fuss. Many varieties also provide lush foliage from spring right up until fall freeze. 'Golden Herald' fuchsia is a large, four to five foot tall shrub with gold and green leaves, spreading anywhere from four to six feet wide, providing a burst of bright color for the shade garden. Even better, red sepals (the outer petals) open to reveal purple corollas (the center) from spring right into the fall. Hummingbirds and pollinators will flock to this beauty that can serve as a showy specimen in woodland gardens.
