Who would guess that this burgundy-leafed bulb is in the same family as asparagus? The common name of Pineapple Lily makes more sense.

CloseOne thing to remember about the Pineapple Lily is that it is a summer blooming bulb, but unlike all the spring bulbs, Eucomis has attractive purple-hued leaves that are as garden-worthy as the incredible flower stalks. Forming large (about two feet tall and wide) rosettes of strap-like leaves in the summer, a flower stalk will arise in late summer that resembles a purple-hued pineapple due to the small white flowers that encircle the stalk and the tuft of green bracts on top. The flowers bloom from the bottom up, extending the bloom period for weeks. A native to South Africa, the Pineapple Lily performs best in full sun with well-draining soil, and is watered regularly.
