CloseFerns are a mainstay of shade gardens, but many are perennials that die down in the winter. 'Autumn Fern' (aka Japanese Shield Fern) is an evergreen that does well in deep shade, growing slowly up to two feet tall and two to three feet wide. New growth emerges in fall shades of orange-red and copper-pink, maturing to a deep green. This fern is not the fastest grower, so works well in hanging baskets and container planters, but will also gradually fill in along borders and in mass plantings.
