CloseCasual observers usually don't think about whether a tree can handle all-day hot sun, but increasing temperatures world-wide might change the way we select plants for our gardens. Samaritan Chinese Dogwood actually does better with some shade at the hottest time of the day, so may be a perfect choice to plant near big conifers or on the east side of taller buildings. Slowly growing to 25 feet with a 20 foot spread, this dogwood has beautifully variegated foliage that emerges in the spring with a slight tinge of pink. The leaves eventually morph to a creamy white and green during the summer when the flowers appear, then take on burgundy and intense pink shades in the fall.
