CloseAs fun and flashy as summer annuals are, the main drawback is that they last only one season, needing replacement each year. Many gardeners are rediscovering the wonder of perennials, and especially the tried and true ones that require little maintenance and return faithfully year after year. The initial expense may be more than annuals, but it pays off in the long run. Consider tickseed, and specifically 'Lightning Bug' coreopsis, a compact mound of feathery foliage that is often covered by golden petaled flowers with bright red eyes. Showy enough to plant alone in borders or mass plantings, 'Lightning Bug' works well in planters and hanging baskets as well. For best results, plant in a sunny location with well-draining soil. Deadheading will prolong the blooms right up until frost when the entire plant dies down. Allegedly deer- and rabbit-resistant, coreopsis is also drought-tolerant once established in the ground.
