Make these sword-like, deep red to burgundy leaves the focal point of your large summer baskets or container planters.

CloseOriginating from Australia, one would assume 'Red Sensation' is a drought-tolerant specimen, but it really looks its best when watered deeply when dry. Also known as a Cabbage Palm, 'Red Sensation' may grow 10 to 20 feet tall in warm winter climates, but here in the Pacific NW, it may reach three to six feet tall and two to three feet wide. The strap-like leaves keep that beautiful red coloring year round, though it may be best to move 'Red Sensation' under cover in extreme cold, or plant in a sheltered but sunny spot in the garden. Consider using this cordyline in large planter baskets or container planters for a bold vertical effect, and add in summer annuals for color and small evergreens for contrasting textures.
