CloseNicknamed Purple Rock Rose or Orchid Rockrose, this tough evergreen shrub has enduring qualities such as tolerance to drought, salt, and poor but well-draining soil. It's also deer resistant, so is an excellent choice for rock gardens, xeriscapes, coastal gardens, hillsides, and even as an informal hedge. Averaging four feet in height and width (but could be two feet smaller or bigger), the narrow green foliage is often covered with large purplish-pink flowers with maroon splotches near the eye from late spring into summer. Purple Rock Rose handles ocean breezes like a champ, but doesn't like is cold winds, so find a sunny sheltered spot in an inland garden.
