Distinct patterns in the leaves resemble peacock feathers, and make this calathea a fascinating addition to the indoor garden.

CloseCalathea makoyana's leaves are so precisely made with distinct markings, one almost wonders if they're real, and that is why so many people love this specimen for their indoor gardens. Growing one to two feet tall and spreading up to a foot wide, the Peacock plant will strut its stuff in any well-lit room, by itself or as the thriller in a combined planter. As with all plants within the Marantaceae family, this calathea's leaves will fold up at night, showing off the burgundy colored undersides of the leaves, then unfolding with daylight. Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil is dry, and mist the leaves periodically to raise the humidity. All calatheas are pet-friendly, but it would be a shame to let the stunning foliage be damaged by chewing pets.
