CloseOne may ask why this summer blooming perennial with bright yellow flowers is nicknamed Blackberry lily, but all becomes apparent when said flower's seed pods burst open to reveal an arrangement of shiny black seeds that resemble blackberries. Prior to that event however, Belamcanda chinensis 'Hello Yellow' (aka Iris domestica 'Hello Yellow') produces wonderful 6-petaled yellow flowers on 18 to 24-inch tall stalks for several weeks late in the summer. The sword-like foliage is much shorter - up to a foot tall - and grows in flattened fans, similar to irises. Given optimal growing conditions (well-draining soil and lots of sun), 'Hello Yellow' may naturalize.
