Arrow-shaped, ruffled green leaves point upward on strong purple stems. This elephant ear has the potential to reach 4 - 6 feet tall, but will most likely be much smaller, especially when grown indoors.

CloseOh, if only this elephant ear could reach its full size as a house plant, or even outdoors in our maritime Pacific NW summer shade gardens, what a breathtaking sight that would be. At maturity, 'Portora' has the potential to reach four to six feet tall and four feet wide with massive, ruffled green leaves borne on purple stems. Frankly, the biggest we've seen alocasias grow in pots is about two feet tall but we often plant other house plants with them, so we may be stunting their growth. That said, alocasias are striking house plants, bringing that tropical flair to the home. Alocasias prefer higher humidity, so indoors, place this specimen's pot on a pebble-filled saucer, half filled with water, mist daily, or invest in an electric humidifier. 'Portora' will be happy in a shady garden spot during the summer, but it needs to come indoors when the temps drop below 60 degrees. As is true of all Elephant Ears, this plant is NOT pet-friendly.
