Possibly one of the most easily recognized and prized Japanese maples in the Pacific NW, the Coral Bark Maple is an excellent choice for smaller gardens and those who will enjoy its varying looks as the seasons change. Spring foliage is a pinkish yellow, then turns a light green during the summer months. As the weather cools, the Coral Bark's foliage turn a glowing yellow before dropping in the fall, making a stark contrast to the brilliant coral-red bark. This espaliered form will highlight its beautiful branches, transforming it into winter art against garden fences or trellises. Not the fastest growing Japanese maple, 'Sango-kaku' may reach 15 to 25 feet tall and 15 to 20 feet wide at maturity if left untended, but it adapts well to large containers, and will grow much more slowly.
