Most urban gardeners lack the space to grow full-sized watermelons, so consider trying 'Sugar Baby.' Red fleshed with fewer seeds than the full-sized watermelons, these 8 - 10 pound fruits will grow on vines that are six to ten feet long. Give it as much sun as possible and direct-sow as soon as the soil warms up to at least 70 degrees. For areas with short growing seasons, you can start seeds indoors, but be aware that watermelons don't like their roots disturbed, so sow them into biodegradable pots.
