CloseThis 'Hokkaido' Chinese elm may be a good choice for beginning bonsai enthusiasts, as it is naturally small and slow growing, with very dense growth and exceptionally small green leaves. It may reach a foot in size after five years, but can be pruned for the purpose of shaping. Please consult with your nearest bonsai club for expert advice!
Should you decide to take this specimen out of the shallow planter and leave it to its own devices, 'Hokkaido' will gradually form an upright mound. It does best in a sunny location with regular watering. This variety has good resistance to Dutch Elm disease as well as certain beetles, though it may be a bit fragile in the presence of extreme ice, snow, or wind.
