CloseTender perennials are always a challenge here in the Portland Metro area, as we're never sure if they'll withstand extended periods of cold and wet. 'Blushing Bride' Spiderwort is an unusual perennial that will add variegated pink, white, and green leaves to outdoor planters, hanging baskets, and borders in shade gardens but usually doesn't handle our winters well, if at all. The good news - it makes a great year-round houseplant, adding its unique variegated coloring to indoor gardens as a trailer with other more upright plants, or on its own. New growth emerges as pink and white, then matures to green, providing a fresh backdrop for the summer blooms that are white with a hint of pale pink. Mounding to about a foot tall, this spiderwort can trail or spread up to four feet, so trimming the stems will not take away from 'Blushing Bride's' good looks, while encouraging denser growth and more variegated foliage. For those who want to have it all, grow 'Blushing Bride' Spiderwort in containers so it can grow outdoors in the spring and summer then retreat to a warmer, dryer environment in the fall and winter.
