'Cherry Falls' is one tomato variety that can do without support and drapes beautifully from hanging baskets or tall container planters. You'll still want to plant the seedlings deep in the soil, leaving only two sets of leaves above ground, even if it means stripping off bottom leaves on a particularly leggy start. All the little hairs along the stem will become roots, providing that much more water and nourishment to the plant. If you choose to plant this variety in the ground, please do install a cage or trellis when you move the start outside.

Plant in a location with all-day sun (six hours plus) and consider dressing up the planter with small marigolds or calendula. Though not proven scientifically, many gardeners have found the ornamentals to be beneficial in repelling insects and attracting pollinators. Basil and borage are also touted as excellent neighbors for tomatoes, though borage may become somewhat overbearing.
