Though commonly referred to as Franky Boy Oriental Arborvitae, the powers-that-be have reclassified this unusual conifer from Thuja orientalis to Platycladus orientalis, so when searching for this specimen, ask under both names. Nomenclature aside, 'Franky Boy' is a one-of-a-kind conifer with striking thread-like foliage - lime green in the interior and lemon yellow on its outer branches - that will sway with the wind. Shearing up to one-third of the branches each fall/winter will maintain a compact, teardrop shaped form. Leaving 'Franky Boy' to its own devices, new growth tends to cascade over the old. A full sun exposure will provide the best color, with the yellow branches deepening to an orange-brown in the winter. Growing three to six inches per year, 'Franky Boy' is an excellent choice for container planters, and can eventually be moved into smaller garden spaces as a specimen, reaching six feet in height and four feet wide.
