Experienced indoor gardeners often think of the striking three-colored, mounding plant when the name Stromanthe is mentioned. However, Stromanthe sanguinea is a subdued but elegant cousin to 'Triostar' with dark to olive green, spear-shaped leaves bisected by a pale green vein running down the center, that can grow to over a foot long and is just as attractive. The undersides are a deep red that is most apparent when the leaves are folded up for the night (thus the common name of Prayer Plant). The graceful, elongated leaves can form a mound from two to three feet tall and almost as wide at maturity, making it a well-behaved focal point of the indoor garden. A well-lit room, higher humidity, and thorough watering when the surface soil is dry will keep this Stromanthe happy and healthy.
