Sometimes called a prayer plant along with other members of the Marantaceae family, this stromanthe's lanceolate leaves will fold up at night, showing off the red undersides.

CloseExperienced indoor gardeners often think of the striking three-colored, mounding plant when the name Stromanthe is mentioned. However, Stromanthe sanguinea is a subdued but elegant cousin to 'Triostar' with dark to olive green, spear-shaped leaves bisected by a pale green vein running down the center, that can grow to over a foot long and is just as attractive. The undersides are a deep red that is most apparent when the leaves are folded up for the night (thus the common name of Prayer Plant). The graceful, elongated leaves can form a mound from two to three feet tall and almost as wide at maturity, making it a well-behaved focal point of the indoor garden. A well-lit room, higher humidity, and thorough watering when the surface soil is dry will keep this Stromanthe happy and healthy.
