Home gardeners may want to think about what their expectations are for strawberries before selecting a particular variety. June-bearing varieties such as 'Shuksan' tend to ripen within a narrow window of time, which is great for those wanting to make jams, preserves or strawberry-centric desserts. Everbearing plants may produce berries from June well into late summer, and it may take longer to collect enough berries for processing. That said, it doesn't hurt to grow both types of berries if you're a strawberry fan, and even a variety of each. 'Shuksan' produces good-flavored, large glossy fruits, later in the June season that are delicious fresh and freeze well. Give strawberries as much sun as possible - you will be rewarded with good yields and sweeter berries. Consider putting straw or hazelnut shells down as a mulch to deter slugs and keep the fruits off the ground.
