We've become very fond of using hens and chicks in container planters and hanging baskets due to their winter hardiness and year-round good looks. 'Dea' will form beautifully symmetrical, tight rosettes, usually no taller than three inches and given the right environment, up to six inches across, with lots of "chicks" forming during the growing season. As a ground cover or in borders, this succulent can spread up to 12 inches, but keep in mind that once the large hens flower, they will die, leaving room for all the babies to take over. Bees and butterflies love the pink summer blooms, but deer usually pass on hens and chicks. Watered regularly when first planted, hens and chicks are drought-tolerant once established, but unless the soil drains well (especially in winter), the roots will most likely rot. Give 'Dea' lots of sun for the red and pink hues to appear. Too little sun will result in mostly green rosettes.
