Gardeners who are forgetful about watering their gardens, indoors and out, may consider sedums their saving grace. We often state a plant is drought-tolerant once established, and that usually implies in the ground. Fortunately, this is somewhat true for succulents grown in container planters and hanging baskets as well. The leaves may get a bit "soft" if too dry, but sedums rebound nicely after a thorough watering. 'Carnea' stonecrop is so attractive with its plump, silvery-gray and red rosettes, it will be hard to overlook this charmer. Growing two to four inches tall, it makes a splendid ground cover for well-draining, sunny locations in the garden, and trails beautifully on retaining walls or from hanging baskets. As a "semi-evergreen" perennial, this variety may not look its best in Pacific NW winters, but it will revive come spring. Stonecrops are also good candidates for coastal gardens due to their salt tolerance.
