Sedums, commonly referred to as stonecrops, excel in sunny, dry, well-draining soil. While many gardeners may have spots lacking regular irrigation, hard clay soil is all too common in the Pacific NW, and unless amended, is not the best environment for succulents. That said, poor gravelly soil may be just the spot for Sedum obtusifolium, a ground-covering succulent that forms dense mats of flat fleshy leaves. Container planters and hanging baskets are also a good option, with the added advantage of making this unusual looking sedum more visible on patios or along walkways. Clusters of pink, late summer blooms adds to its interest. In the ground, Sedum obtusifolium will form an evergreen, drought tolerant ground cover, not favored by deer, but attractive to bees and butterflies when in bloom.
