CloseFor gardeners who aren't always on top of watering, succulents may be their saving grace. Stonecrops, so named for their ability to grow in rocky dry soils, include a wide array of sedums varying in size, color, and texture. 'SunSparkler Firecracker' Sedum emerges in the spring with thick green leaves that turn cherry red in the sun, forming a dense mat of color, four to six inches high, and spreading up to 18 inches. Clusters of star-shaped, pink flowers bloom in late summer, attracting bees and butterflies, and contrast beautifully against the foliage. Well-draining soil is a must, so some gardeners may prefer to use 'Firecracker' in container planters or hanging baskets, though it will require more regular watering than if established in the ground, in borders or on retaining walls.
