A fall-blooming shade lover, Japanese Rockfoil forms low mounds of glossy, rounded, red-bronze leaves.

CloseShade plants always seem to come into their own well after sun-loving annuals and perennials are rocking out, so it makes sense that several shade perennials strut their stuff in the late summer to early fall. Japanese Rockfoil is one of those late bloomers, sending up airy stalks of dainty white flowers on reddish stems, rising above mounds of glossy, red-bronze leaves. Treat this perennial as a ground cover, to be used in container planters, along walkways, and any shady spot that needs a bit of color and texture. Growing a bit wider than it is tall, Japanese Rockfoil tops out around six to ten inches tall and up to a foot wide, but that may take a few seasons before reaching maximum size.
