Did you know there is actually an organzation whose aim is to identify great plant picks for the maritime Pacific NW? Founded by the Elisabeth C. Miller Botanical Garden in 2001, Great Plant Picks ( lists over 1000 exceptional plants and on that list is Salvia 'Blue Hill,' under an alternate name of 'Blauhugel.' Some of the criteria includes longevity, hardiness in zones 7 and 8, pest and disease resistance, and ease of maintenance. 'Blue Hill' Meadow Sage hits all those buttons and then some. This variety can grow up to two feet tall and about 18 inches wide at maturity, thriving in full sun, enduring less than regular watering, and rarely is eaten by deer or rabbits. Fragrant leaves and beautiful violet blue flower stalks last from spring right into the fall, attracting bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. There's little not to like about this reliable perennial, and that's why it was named a Great Plant Pick!
